February 6, 2019Did you know… Login PIN’s in Windows 10
Windows login PIN’s are different than normal login passwords and are not something that can be centrally managed. Rather, a PIN is tied to the local computer. This can be an issue if the PIN is lost and there is no longer access to the cell phone that was originally configured for multi-factor authentication on the device.
Recently, this became an issue when we were getting a computer ready for a client who no longer knew the PIN and no longer had access to the cell phone used for configuration during set-up. This rendered the multi-factor authentication as no longer accessible. We were left with two options: either disable the PIN, or reinstall windows.
“Windows Hello” is also responsible for enabling bio-metric (finger print or facial recognition) logins. Most users and clients do not login using bio-metrics, so disabling this feature hasn’t been an issue.
Our recommendation to our clients is the disabling of “Windows Hello” as this is the feature that enables PIN logins.
